Canvas Meets Computer

Victor Hsieh makes an often whimsical yet still serious contribution to the discussion of technology in current art. Hsieh paints mature biomorphic forms just on the border of language. Frequently working on a layered background, he develops a playful vocabulary of horizontal, diagonal and vertical shapes that seem to project from the canvas or recede into it. Hsiehs works, energetic and deeply felt, are filled with puerile amusement and bliss.

Whether in miniature works like "Brain Food" and "Micron Programming," or in larger paintings like "Tooth With Gum," wavelike forms are offset by angular ones and deep blues by light pinks, producing vortices that evoke virtual reality. In "Fractal Concerto" a dynamic space is held together by playing off two vertical anatomies that contain fanciful configurations, streaked circular forms and an intricate array of swaying lines. In his "Web Navigation Tools," elements of digitized collage and hard-edge line can be found in the upper left side of the canvas, which is otherwise active with subtly interchanging and overlapping organic forms. "Jungle Gym" highlights a consolidated network of transparent bubbles, through which one can observe a geometric arrangement of hot pink and violet panels.

In the giant "Eyes," undulating lines and dispersed dots form an intricate mesh above a vivid spectrum of botanical forms. Hsiehs imagery is dependent on inner experience, yet it supports a larger symbolism. In "Floating Iconography," dwellings amid a ladder of fractal-like shapes and floating ovals suggest complete weightlessness.
Remaining faithful to the discoveries of unconscious imagery, Hsieh uses an inventive approach to fathom the complexities of technology. One surge leads to another, in a continual dance that is not foreclosed by a prior system of reference. Hsieh is not ideological or didactic, but yields to his unparalleled intuition.
